The long wait for Soldier of Sidon produced an ending that is far less than triumphant, and even less conclusive than Soldier of Arete, leaving Latro to look for his sword (perhaps fruitlessly?) and his destiny. It's rare these days that I feel baffled by a novel. Gene Wolfe finally got around to writing the third book after Soldier of the Mist and Soldier of Arete, and I've finally gotten around to reading it. Latro in the Mist is an omnibus of two books Soldier of the Mist (1986) and Soldier of Arete (1989); a chunky 623-page (with another 16 pages of glossary) doorstop of a book, but well worth plowing through. Soldier of Sidon would be a continuation of the series about Latro, begin in Soldier in the Mist and Soldier of Arete and collected in the new omnibus Latro in the Mist. On Blue's Waters (1999) In Green's Jungles (2000) Return to the Whorl (2001). The two previous novels, combined in Latro in the Mist (Soldier of the Mist and Soldier of Arete) are generally considered classics of contemporary fantasy. So, when I was in a book store well over a decade ago and saw Soldier of Arete by Gene Wolfe, I bought it, even though it was the second in a two-volume series and I had no way of knowing If I could get a copy of the first: Soldier in The Mist. The two previous novels, combined in "Latro In The Mist" ("Soldier of the Mist" and "Soldier of Arete") are generally considered classics of contemporary fantasy. Wolfe's forgetful protagonist Latro continues the odyssey through classical Greece begun in Soldier of the Mist . Usually, either I feel I grasp the theme of a book at a certain basic level, and understand what's involved in its imagery; or else it escapes It tells of the adventures of a soldier, a Roman or Italian who fought in the Persian army defeated by the Greeks at Plataea; this soldier, Latro, is a serial amnesiac, who each day loses his memories of the day before. Too many women, too many gods, too much talk.
